Candy to Get Name on Cup in GC Festival Tribute
May 29, 2007 5:11 PM
Rectifying an ancient wrong, John Candy will get his name on the Grey Cup as an owner of the 1991 Grey Cup Champion Toronto Argonauts. Also announced were Grey Cup festival plans, which bring many new and innovative events to the week. Also, only 5,000 tickets remain. #Tocchet Pleads Guilty to Gambling Charges
May 25, 2007 7:38 PM
In plea, Tocchet denies betting on hockey and mob ties. He likely will avoid incarceration, whereas his co-conspirators both face jail time. #Upper Level Seats Sold Out for 2007 Grey Cup
May 24, 2007 7:50 PM
With upper level seats now gone, and only 9,000 seats remaining a few months ago, I would guess they will sell out before Labour Day, perhaps before Week 1 of the CFL season is complete. #Another CFL Owner Makes Health Care Donation
May 24, 2007 7:45 PM
David Braley, owner of the B.C. Lions and a Hamilton native, has donated $5 million to St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, a “regional centre for urology and nephrology” in Southern Ontario. This is in addition to $5 million Braley donated to McMaster University in Hamilton last year, which I failed to mention in yesterday’s entry on the Argonauts charitable works. #Canadian NFL Broadcast Contract Gets Massive Coverage
May 23, 2007 5:13 PM
The Globe and Mail had no less than four stories on CTV and Rogers winning Canadian NFL broadcast rights away from Global. If this is the coverage the announcement gets, we will have to see if the CFL starts getting lost on TSN come September 2008. #Argos Make $4 Million Donation to SickKids
May 23, 2007 5:06 PM
$4 million over 5 years. To my knowledge. no similar contribution from any Canadian team in more prosperous leagues has ever been made. CFL owners really are a different breed. While the corporations running other teams in other leagues look to maximise ticket prices, here’s some owners giving back to the community. Sure, the press release doesn’t reveal the real accounting around this donation, but $800,000 a year, even after tax benefits, is pretty good for a team that can only be breaking even at best according to the Toronto media. #Roughrider Receiver Excited About New System
May 20, 2007 11:58 AM
If this system performs and the team stays healthy, Saskatchewan should be very exciting to watch this year. #Frustrated Pronger Lashes Out at Media
May 20, 2007 11:55 AM
Discussing his one game suspension, Pronger attacked NHL officiating as being inconsistent and said the NHL should not be pressured into handing out suspensions by the Canadian media. I thought the suspension to Pronger was suspect as was the only penalty on the play, a major boarding penalty on Niedermayer. Referees see blood and something must be called it seems.
#Rule 44
- A minor or major penalty, at the discretion of the Referee, based upon the degree of violence of the impact with the boards, shall be imposed on any player who checks an opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to be thrown violently in the boards.
Globe and Mail Breaks Palmer Group Bow Out
May 15, 2007 4:42 PM
Shortly after the Globe and Mail‘s story this morning reporting that the Bill Palmer group was withdrawing from bidding for a CFL franchise in Ottawa, the CFL released a short press release stating the CFL was focussing on “new opportunities” from strong interest expressed by several parties. Then the story was picked up by all media outlets. The consensus? No one believes there are actual other parties interested. #Shroud of Mystery Surrounds Asper Selection
May 2, 2007 4:37 PM
Although the Winnipeg Blue Bomber Football Club has chosen David Asper’s company to negotiate exclusively with, it still is not clear whether the Bomber board is willing to turn over ownership of the club as part of the deal and a general shroud of mystery surrounds the process that led to this decision. #Bombers Decide on Asper
May 1, 2007 4:51 PM
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced today they will start negotiating a binding letter of intent with Creswin Properties Ltd., which is owned by David Asper. A major announcement on the bid winner and no mention of Bomber ownership as part of the Asper proposal and where that stands with this negotiation? #
