Sports gambling has a long history, but the Super Bowl and the NFL became the biggest sports gambling business due to a convenient arms-length encouragement of wagering to increase interest. #

The CFL or the Palmer ownership group is not commenting, but in a Ottawa Citizen story, also picked up by the CBC and TSN, two major financial issues have been agreed upon. With these issues resolved, the bidders need to work on player issues with the league as the last major issue. It is possible the framework could be in place to get tentative approval at the CFL Congress Feb. 12-15. The franchise would then have time to finalize negotiations for the stadium lease and team name to be awarded the franchise and be fully operational by training camps in May. #

The CFL has found out that when you let things go when they don’t really affect you, it comes back to bite you as precendent when circumstances change. Never should they have allowed players to be in under contract to both leagues previously, no matter what the schedules allowed. #

Something is going to happen in Winnipeg, whether private owner and new stadium, or new commercial development on existing stadium site. Unfortunately, the private owner is probably the best option as private investors are likely very hesitant to partner with the public club by trying to band-aid the existing site. There is just no money to be made there. #

Franchise is worth $8-10 million (by new standards) so Asper gets a portion or all of it for partly funding new $100 million stadium. I cannot see how a private/public partnership could work; if Asper buys the Bombers, I think it would have to be 100%. I think there will be a lot more questions asked before this goes through. #

The CBC reports that David Asper is finalizing a proposal for the Winnipeg Blue Bomber Board of Directors that would have him assume control of the Bombers and help fund a $100-million stadium and retail complex. #
