A freak injury on Calgary QB Henry Burris (see 3:00 mark of these highlights) has cost the Stampeders $10,000 as well as Burris’ services for at least two weeks. Afterwards, the league reviewed the “hit” (Moreno slid into Burris fairly gently) and stated no disciplinary action was required. The Stampeders then released a letter disagreeing with the decision and calling on the league to do more to protect quarterbacks. The CFL promptly fined the Stampeders $10,000 for the comments.
In reality, the Stampeder’s focus with protecting QB’s are a misdirection to deflect from the fact they have no viable replacement for Burris. Protect the QB’s all you want, the fact is players will still get hurt and your team better have the depth to get through it. Complaining about it after the fact does little, especially when the responsibility of many QB injuries falls on the players themselves.
